Loosening the Apron Strings

This is such a great picture of what being a parent is about. Supporting at the beginning, then running along beside for protection. Hovering and watching for a while, then granting independence.

I think God treats his kids that way, too. He never lets us go beyond his reach, but gives us the choice of how to live our lives. I like to think he's the type of father who always makes sure his kids wear their helmets.

Hey! Was that You on the bike? Was that me running along beside you. I'm sure it was. I remember it so well.

You only needed a little support, and frankly I couldn't keep up with you for long even though I was really in my physical prime at the time. We could only watch carefully, always ready to reach out and help, for as long as you remained nearby. Too soon you found another helper and you found other highways and even foreign byways and we were forced to acknowledge the independence you had so successfully declared from the mother and fatherland.

I'm sure that was you!
